SYRACUSE, NY, February 3, 2016 - NAP (Noninsured Crop Assistance Program) is a risk management tool offered by the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA). Essentially, NAP is crop insurance for crops you can't buy conventional crop insurance on. "The 2014 Farm Bill expanded the NAP program and made it a great tool for New York producers to manage their risk," stated James Barber, the New York State Executive Director of FSA. He continued "this winter is further proof that the weather in New York is unpredictable, making coverage like NAP a wise choice for protection from damaging weather like freeze, hail, excessive wind and excessive moisture."
The deadline for NAP on most spring planted crops is March 15th including beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, hops, artichokes, kohlrabi, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, watermelons, as well as several other crops.
NAP covers losses from natural adversities such as drought, freeze, hail, excessive wind and excessive moisture disasters on crops for which no permanent federal crop insurance is available, including perennial grass forage and grazing crops, fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, floriculture, ornamental nursery, aquaculture, turf grass, ginseng, honey, syrup, bioenergy, and industrial crops.
